"As a teacher with experience working both in the U.S. and in Guatemala, I have witnessed first hand the impact that resources such as books, the Internet, and other technologies can have on students' interest, motivation and initiative to learn and explore. It is unfortunate that many of our students at the Centro Explorativo have little to no access to books while in school, and their creativity is often stifled by the rote teaching styles found so often in Guatemalan public schools.  Together with the teachers and supporters of the Centro Explorativo, we strive to provide a space in which students can find the answers to all of their questions while always formulating new questions and seeking new answers throughout their lives."

"Research has shown that children need to listen to approximately 1,000 stories before they develop the ability to read independently.  This seems like a difficult task in Guatemala where children's books are scarce and many parents are illiterate.   Without access to literature, students are at a tremendous disadvantage in acquiring literacy skills.  The Centro Explorative is one place that helps bridge that gap.  At the Centro children are read to everyday, and the students participate in language rich activities.    The majority of the education the students receive in their schools is rote memorization.  The Centro offers the students problem solving and experiential learning activities.  Students find that learning can be fun and engaging.   It is a magical place in which knowledge brings infinite possibilities and opportunities to the children of Nebaj."
